Underfloor heating and the benefits

by UFH1

Underfloor heating is fast becoming the preferred option to heat any home or workspace. More and more people are choosing to heat their homes with Underfloor heating as it is very low to run but remains high in comfort with huge environmental benefits.

Underfloor heating radiates upwards from the floor space, heating other surfaces in the room which in turn then radiate secondary heat.  Floor draughts are eliminated and the heat in the room remains even.

More traditional methods such as wall mounted radiators are known as convected heating which uses the air in a room as the mechanism to disperse heat into the whole room.  Using this type of conventional heating means that naturally the warmest part of a room is the ceiling and the coolest is the floor.  This is the opposite of Underfloor heating which is warmer underfoot and loss of heat is minimised.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Underfloor Heating

Advantages

  • Even heat distribution: Underfloor heating radiates heat evenly from the ground up, completely eliminating cold spots and floor draughts that come with radiators.
  • Energy efficient: Underfloor heating requires much lower water temperatures (usually around 35-45°C) to warm a room compared to traditional radiators (65-80°C), reducing your boiler's workload and lowering energy consumption.
  • Frees up wall space: Removing bulky wall radiators frees up valuable wall and floor space, giving you total freedom when decorating and arranging furniture.

Disadvantages

  • Installation time: Installing a system, particularly retrofitting a wet system into an older property, can take more time and create more initial upheaval than simply swapping a radiator.
  • Floor height considerations: Some systems can slightly raise the height of your floor. However, modern low-profile underfloor heating kits easily mitigate this issue.

Underfloor Heating Benefits FAQs

Is it worth getting underfloor heating?

Yes, for most homeowners, underfloor heating is highly worth the investment. It provides luxurious comfort, operates silently, and adds value to your property. Because the system runs highly efficiently, it can also lead to long-term savings on your energy bills, offsetting the initial installation cost over time.

Is it cheaper to run radiators or underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating is generally cheaper to run than traditional radiators. Because radiant heat covers the entire floor area, the system reaches the perfect temperature using significantly cooler water than a radiator.

Does underfloor heating use a lot of electricity?

Wet underfloor heating systems use very little electricity, relying on it only to power the pump and thermostats. Electric underfloor heating mats rely entirely on electricity to generate heat, which can be more expensive to run across large areas. However, electric mats are incredibly efficient and cost-effective for smaller, single-room projects like bathrooms or properties equipped with solar panels.

What is the life expectancy of underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating is exceptionally durable and is designed to outlast traditional heating methods. The high-quality pipes used in wet systems typically have a lifespan of over 50 years.
